The story behind

There are songs that, by their nature, seem like a breath of fresh air, a moment to release tension. I Shall Be Free, by Bob Dylan, fits that description perfectly. Recorded on December 6, 1962, at Columbia Studios in New York, with John Hammond as producer, this piece became the one responsible for closing the album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, released on May 27, 1963. It has been seen as a comedic counterpoint to the more serious themes that populate that record. Curiously, Dylan has never performed it live.

The structure of I Shall Be Free draws directly from the tradition of "talking blues," a style that Dylan frequently cultivated. It is partly inspired by "We Shall Be Free," a song popularized in the 1940s by figures such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie. Dylan himself, during the recording sessions for his second album, explored several versions of this theme. The context of its creation is situated at a crucial moment for his career, just before his music began to fuse tradition folk with increasingly personal and bold lyrics. The album in which it is included, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, marks a turning point, featuring eleven original compositions out of thirteen songs, a notable contrast with his debut.
