The story behind

Hotel California, according to DoReSol

The story behind *Hotel California* is fascinating, and it's not just about a catchy melody. It all began with an instrumental demo that Don Felder put together in a rented house on Malibu beach. He used a drum machine and a twelve-string guitar recorded on a four-track machine. Then, he added a bass line and shared copies with Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Felder, who joined the Eagles thanks to his high school classmate Bernie Leadon, used to make tapes of his musical ideas, and Henley, with his knack for lyrics, would often take them to complete. The demo of *Hotel California* had hints of Latin music and reggae, which caught Henley's attention, who described it as something that "sounds like Mexican reggae or bolero," giving it a first working title: *Mexican Reggae*.

Once Frey and Henley became interested in the music, they started shaping the lyrics. Henley explained that the idea came from the experience of driving towards Los Angeles at night, seeing the glow of the lights on the horizon and the images that vision evoked about Hollywood and the dreams one has. The song became a reflection on that journey, from innocence to experience. Henley chose the concept of "Hotel California" because the Beverly Hills Hotel had become a key point, both literally and symbolically, in their lives at that time. For them, Beverly Hills was an almost mythical place, and the hotel represented everything Los Angeles meant at that stage of their careers, marking the end of an era of innocence. The song, released as the second single from the album of the same name in 1977, was written by Don Felder (music), Glenn Frey and Don Henley (lyrics), with Henley on lead vocals. The ending is highlighted by an electric guitar solo of over two minutes, where Felder and Joe Walsh take turns before joining in harmonies and arpeggios. This track, with its 6:30 duration, was awarded the Grammy for Record of the Year in 1978, and in 1998, the guitar solo was voted the best of all time by readers of *Guitarist* magazine.
