The story behind
Bob Dylan's version of "Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance" has its roots in a 1927 recording by blues musician Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas, who titled it "Honey, Won't You Allow Me One More Chance". Todd Harvey's analysis in his book *The Formative Dylan* details how Dylan took Thomas's AAAC rhyme scheme and four-bar 2/4 phrases, but rewrote much of the lyrics, creating four-bar verses where the last phrase functions as a chorus. Dylan also sped up the original tempo and added his own guitar and harmonica solos between verses.
This reinterpretation was included on Bob Dylan's second studio album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, released on May 27, 1963, by Columbia Records. This record marked a turning point, as Dylan began composing contemporary lyrics to traditional melodies, with eleven of its thirteen songs being his own compositions. The album opens with "Blowin' in the Wind", which became an anthem of the 1960s, and contains other pieces considered classics of the folk scene of that era, such as "Girl from the North Country", "Masters of War", "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall", and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right". The recording of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, which included "Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance", was produced by John Hammond.
