The story behind
Homecoming: I. The Death of St. Jimmy / II. East 12th St. / III. Nobody Likes You / IV. Rock and Roll Girlfriend / V. We’re Coming Home Again, according to DoReSol
The piece "Homecoming" by Green Day is a five-part suite totaling nearly ten minutes in length, an ambitious structure for a rock album. Each section — *I. The Death of St. Jimmy*, *II. East 12th St.*, *III. Nobody Likes You*, *IV. Rock and Roll Girlfriend*, and *V. We’re Coming Home Again* — functions as a chapter in the narrative of the album American Idiot. This composition was recorded between 2003 and 2004 in studios in Oakland and Hollywood, both in California, with Rob Cavallo and the band handling production. The overall sound of the album, and thus of "Homecoming", was crafted with the help of several recording engineers such as Joe Brown and Greg Burns, and the mixing was overseen by Dmitar Krnjaic and Chris Lord-Alge.
The album American Idiot, of which this extended song is part, was conceived as a punk rock opera. The central story revolves around a character named Jesus of Suburbia, a working-class youth navigating disillusionment and dissent during a time marked by significant events such as September 11 and the Iraq War. The band, featuring Billie Joe Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Mike Dirnt on bass and backing vocals, and Tré Cool on drums and backing vocals, already had a history dating back to 1986, when they began under the name Sweet Children in Berkeley, California, before adopting the name Green Day in 1989.
