The story behind
High as the Ceiling, according to DoReSol
The song High as the Ceiling by Stereophonics is one of those tracks that sounds like garage music with the lights on: direct, unfiltered, and with an air of "here we are, this is what we’ve got." It’s not the typical epic ballad or an anthem to sing along to, but rather a moment where the band steps into the studio and lets the track breathe on its own. Clocking in at just three minutes and twenty seconds, there’s no room for unnecessary adornments, only a rhythmic foundation that intertwines with a guitar that seems perpetually on the verge of taking off—yet never loses its way. It’s as if Kelly Jones had said, "Let’s record this like it’s the last track of the night," and the result is that hard-to-fake sense of authenticity.
The album You Gotta Go There to Come Back, released in 2003, was the last one with Stuart Cable on drums before his departure from the band. Kelly Jones, besides being the vocalist and guitarist, also produced it, aiming to capture the energy of their live concerts. "I wanted something raw, spontaneous, but with layers and textures that made it feel alive," he commented in an interview. The song High as the Ceiling fits perfectly into that approach: there are no excessive retouches, just the band playing as if they were in a rehearsal space, yet with the precision of those who know exactly what they’re doing. Engineers Andy Burden, Chris Steffen, and Brian Vibberts captured every note, while Jack Joseph-Puig shaped the mix to ensure the sound didn’t lose a single ounce of its essence.
