The story behind
Madame Helga, according to DoReSol
The song Madame Helga by Stereophonics is inspired by an experience the band had during their tour of Sri Lanka in 2002, specifically at a unique place called Helga's Folly. This space is owned by Helga Desilva Blow Perera, from whom the song's title is derived. The track, which appears on their fourth album You Gotta Go There to Come Back, stands out for its fusion of glam metal and gospel, creating a distinctive sound that resonates with the band's essence. Upon its release as a single on May 19, 2003, it reached the fourth position on the UK Singles Chart and also climbed to number 15 in Ireland.
The recording of Madame Helga took place between September and December 2002 at Hook End Manor studio, located in Checkendon, England. The production was led by Kelly Jones, who is also the song's composer. In his quest to capture the raw and spontaneous energy of their live performances, Jones focused on crafting a work rich in detail and texture. Despite being one of the band's most successful singles, curiously, it was not included in the standard edition of their greatest hits album released in 2008, Decade in the Sun: Best of Stereophonics. The song also features a live version that appears on the album Live from Dakota, further showcasing its enduring appeal in the group's repertoire.
