You Stole My Money Honey

The first time I heard You Stole My Money Honey, I was instantly hooked. It's not just that opening riff that sticks in your head like a hook, but the mix of urgency and cheekiness the track has: Kelly Jones sings as if someone had just swiped his last drink from the bar, and the band responds with an energy that sounds like a garage with amps turned all the way up. The song doesn't beat around the bush; it starts straight away, no introduction, and within less than a minute you're already nodding your head without being able to help it. The most curious thing is that, despite sounding so spontaneous, every layer of guitar and drums is placed down to the millimeter, as if they had rehearsed that chaos for years.

Recorded in 2003 for the album You Gotta Go There to Come Back, this track was one of the first where Kelly Jones dared to produce the album himself, aiming to capture that electricity that only live concerts have. As he later explained, he wanted the result to sound "raw but layered", as if each instrument breathed separately yet at the same time formed part of a single organism. Engineers Andy Burden, Chris Steffen, and Brian Vibberts worked side by side with Jack Joseph-Puig on the mix, achieving a final sound that had that warm yet cutting texture, like a sunset in a mining town seen from inside a pub. And although the album ended up being their third consecutive number one in the UK, You Stole My Money Honey stands out for how it breaks with the solemnity of other tracks on the record: here there are no deep reflections or complicated metaphors, just a direct warning and a bassline that never stops moving.
