The story behind
This Herencia by Fito Páez is one of those pieces almost no one heard in its original version, yet it ended up leaving traces in songs that did become hits. Recorded in 1988 as part of an unnamed demo, it was originally created as the soundtrack for a short film that never premiered due to lack of funding. Of the fourteen songs that make up that material, three later reappeared under different titles and on different albums: Circo Beat (1994), Sol en Cinco by Fabiana Cantilo (1995), and Piojos y piojitos (1991). These twists are what make this recording, barely fifty-seven seconds long, function like a small laboratory where Fito tested melodies that would later become hits.
The context of Herencia is as curious as its fate. At the time, Fito had not yet crossed the threshold of massive success that would come in the nineties with El amor después del amor (1992) and Circo Beat (1994), but he was already a key figure in the Trova rosarina. This demo reflects that moment of transition: recorded with borrowed equipment, without any pretensions of perfection, yet with an energy that would later define his style. That such a brief song survived in later versions speaks to its essence: a fragment that, though minimal, carried the seed of something bigger.
