The story behind
What makes Dark Glasses such a particular piece is the depth with which it addresses a feeling as complex as grief, and even more so, that it comes from such a young composer. The lyrics, written by Shakira when she was barely eight or nine years old, focus on the sorrow that gripped her father after the loss of his older brother in 1979. The song attempts to decipher the barrier he imposed with his dark glasses, an effort to hide his pain. Shakira herself has commented that her father used these glasses to conceal his sadness, and she connected that image with the idea of a soul hiding behind a facade. It is interesting to note that, of all the songs on her debut album, this is the only one that is not about romantic love, but about a family bond and empathy towards the suffering of others.
This composition was gestated in a key period of her childhood, between 1985 and 1987, and was included in her first album, Magia, released in 1991. The recording process took place in 1991 at Aga Studios in Bogotá, Colombia, under the label Sony Colombia. Despite the apparent maturity of the lyrics, Shakira was only thirteen years old when she recorded the album and fourteen at the time of its release. The song, along with the rest of the material from Magia, is a collection of themes that Shakira began writing from the age of eight, exploring personal experiences, adventures, and dreams. Although the album did not have a major commercial impact, selling only about 1200 copies, Dark Glasses has remained an early testament to her talent for capturing deep emotions. The song is only available on old physical copies of the album, as Shakira has decided not to re-release her first two discographic works.
