The story behind

Fly Away, according to DoReSol

When Lenny Kravitz was working on his fifth album, titled 5, he recorded this song almost by accident. One day, in the studio, he was testing a new amplifier. He plugged in a guitar and started playing, experimenting with chords like A, C, G, and D. He felt so inspired that he asked the engineer to set up the microphones to record what was coming out. At that moment, the album was already ready to be delivered to the record label, and Kravitz thought about releasing Fly Away as a B-side. However, after hearing it, a friend insisted that he should include it on the album. Despite the label's initial reluctance, Kravitz sent them the song, and upon hearing it, they agreed to add it to the album.

Fly Away became a notable hit. It reached number 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topped the charts in Iceland and the United Kingdom. It also ranked among the top ten in countries like Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. Its popularity in the UK was boosted by its use in a television advertisement for the Peugeot 206 Supermini car. In Australia and New Zealand, the song reached number eight and was certified gold in both nations. This track contributed to expanding the impact of the album 5 in Europe and earned Kravitz a Grammy Award in 1999 for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, the first of four consecutive awards in that same category. The music video, directed by Paul Hunter, features Kravitz and his band performing in a club to an enthusiastic crowd.
