The story behind
I Belong to You, according to DoReSol
The song I Belong to You, released in August 1998, stands out for its relaxed and sensual atmosphere, with a marked influence of calypso that fuses with rock and pop. This piece, part of Lenny Kravitz's fifth studio album, titled 5, managed to position itself on important charts such as 15th place on the US Billboard Adult Top 40 and number 71 on the Billboard Hot 100. The production, handled by Kravitz himself, sought to expand the reggae sound that was already perceived in the music, creating a ballad that many describe as one of his most intimate and seductive songs.
The recording of 5, the album from which I Belong to You is taken, took place in several stages. Pre-production began in early 1997, and recording sessions started in October of that same year at the studio Lenny Kravitz had in his New York home. During this period, the studio received visits from figures such as Madonna, Chris Rock, Bobby Brown, Marilyn Manson, and Gwen Stefani. Subsequently, sessions continued in The Bahamas, at Compass Point Studios, under the engineering and mixing of Terry Manning. The music video, directed by Mark Seliger and Fred Woodward, was filmed in The Bahamas, the land of origin of Kravitz's maternal family, actress Roxie Roker. The images reflect the reggae essence of the song, showing Kravitz interacting with local people, walking through the streets, and even singing submerged up to his stomach in the ocean, visually complementing the vibe of the piece.
