The story behind
The song Esfinge, with its duration of 4 minutes and 17 seconds, is taken from the album Luz, the fifth studio work by the Brazilian singer-songwriter Djavan. This album, released in 1982, was conceived with a particular ambition: to connect his music with the American public. In that context, Djavan traveled to the United States, invited by CBS Records, where he had the opportunity to collaborate with producer Ronnie Foster and the renowned musician Stevie Wonder. From this union emerged the piece Samurai, where Wonder contributed his talent. Although the album did not achieve the expected sales in North America, it did resonate strongly in his native country, Brazil, selling over 500,000 copies by the fall of 1984.
Djavan, originally from Maceió, Alagoas, is known for fusing traditional South American rhythms with influences from African music. His beginnings in music saw him form the group Luz, Som, Dimensão, performing covers of The Beatles. In 1973, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he began performing in nightclubs. After participating in various festivals, he gained recognition and released his debut album in 1976, which included the hit song Flor de lis. Subsequently, his works continued to explore African sounds, giving rise to other notable songs such as Açaí, Samurai, and Sina. Producer Ronnie Foster played a key role in the production of Luz.
