The story behind
The Flight is one of those pieces that appear along the way with little fanfare, yet hold a curious story within their notes. Recorded in 1988 as part of a demo titled Novel, this song remained in limbo until years later, when some of its melodies resurfaced under different names and in different contexts. What’s interesting isn’t just its origin, but how those melodic lines — which could have been forgotten — ended up intersecting with other projects by the artist, as if they were pieces of a puzzle assembling over time. It has the perfect length, 3:34, flowing effortlessly without tiring, yet dense enough to leave a mark on first-time listeners.
The recording of Novel began as a commission for the soundtrack of a short film that never saw the light of day, trapped by financial issues. Fito Páez, at the time still far from the commercial big stages, was exploring sounds that would later become a hallmark of his work: melodies with a cinematic air, lyrics that seem plucked from a novel itself, and that piano that always accompanies him. Though the demo was never officially released, some of its songs — like As de Poker or Las brujitas — ended up reinvented in other albums, proving that what may seem like a draft can sometimes hide ideas that endure. The artist, hailing from Rosario, already displayed here his ability to blend the intimate with the universal, a trait that years later would earn him five Latin Grammy Awards and a Konex Platinum Prize as Argentina’s best rock composer of the decade.
