The story behind

Eifersucht, according to DoReSol

The song "Eifersucht," which means "Jealousy" or "Envy" in German, is the tenth track on Rammstein's album *Sehnsucht*. This song delves into a provocative exploration of envy and rivalry, featuring lyrics in which the protagonist directly challenges those who envy him, almost inviting them to “kill him and devour him.” With a runtime of three minutes and thirty-seven seconds, the song was produced by Rammstein themselves alongside Bobo and Jacob Hellner, while Ronald Prent handled the mixing—suggesting a creative process in which the band left a strong imprint on the final sound.

*Sehnsucht*, which translates to “Longing,” was the band’s second studio album, released in Germany on August 22, 1997, and worldwide on August 25 of the same year under the Motor Music Records label. This album not only reached number one in Germany but also achieved notable success across Europe. The album’s visual aesthetic is as distinctive as its music: its cover unfolds to reveal photographs of the faces of Rammstein’s members, altered to appear as if they were being tortured. These images, created by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein, actually depict original surgical instruments that belonged to Ferdinand Sauerbruch, a renowned surgeon. In contrast, the back of the album features an image of a white-sand beach, creating an interesting visual contrast.

Rammstein, an industrial metal band formed in Berlin, Germany, in 1994, is recognized as one of the most successful groups within the Neue Deutsche Härte scene. Its lineup has remained unchanged since its inception, featuring Till Lindemann on lead vocals, Richard Z. Kruspe and Paul H. Landers on guitars and backing vocals, Oliver “Ollie” Riedel on bass, Christoph “Doom” Schneider on drums and electronic percussion, and Christian “Flake” Lorenz on keyboards. Although their lyrics are written primarily in German, they have explored other languages such as English, Spanish, French, and Russian. Their live performances are legendary for their theatricality and extensive use of pyrotechnics, elements that have contributed to their worldwide fame and sales of more than fifteen million albums by 2009. The band’s name, released by Universal Music Group, is a tribute to the Ramstein air disaster, with an additional “m” that, according to the band, literally translates to “tamping stone.”
