The story behind

Dictatorshit by Sepultura is one of those songs that doesn’t ask for permission to exist. At just 87 seconds long, it wastes no time on frills: it strikes directly, like a sonic punch that cuts through the air. The bass of Paulo Jr and the drums of Igor Cavalera set an obsessive, almost tribal rhythm, while the guitars of Andreas Kisser and Max Cavalera weave together with raw distortion. There’s no room here for long melodies or elaborate lyrics; the title says it all. It’s a manifesto in the form of a song, where rage and urgency translate into notes. They recorded it in the United States between late 1995 and early 1996, alongside the rest of the tracks for Roots, their sixth album. The process was intense: Ross Robinson took the helm as producer, aiming to capture the band’s raw, primal energy. Among the engineers, Rob Agnello, Chuck Johnson, and Richard Kaplan captured every snare hit and distortion without filters, while Steve Sisco and Andy Wallace polished the sound in the mix. The result was an album that, in its brevity, feels more like a ritual than a conventional record. Dictatorshit doesn’t aspire to be memorable for its length, but for what it achieves in those minutes stolen from time.
