The story behind

The first time Demoliendo hoteles plays, the bass hits like a sharp blow and the drums set a rhythm that never stops. There's no room for doubt: that introduction of three repeated notes, almost mechanical, is pure contained tension. The lyrics arrive afterward, with short phrases that clash against each other like the objects breaking in a hotel room. It's not a song you listen to: it's one you feel, as if Charly García himself had poured the disorder of that night in Mendoza into the studio—where, according to the story, he wrecked the room he was staying in. The electric piano and guitar intertwine in a rough, uncompromising dialogue, and the result is a track that sounds like urgency, like something that couldn't wait even a second longer.

García wrote it in 1984, just as the country was trying to shake off the weight of the dictatorship. Democracy had only just arrived with Raúl Alfonsín, but the wounds were still open. The song captures that mood: there's no triumphalism, just a mix of relief and distrust. The album Piano Bar, where it appears, was recorded at ION Studios in Buenos Aires and later mixed at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York. What's curious is that the material was almost recorded live, with very few overdubs, giving it that raw sound that remains its hallmark today. The version of Demoliendo hoteles lasts just over two minutes, but in that time, years of history, frustration, and that rage that only bursts free when there's no turning back fit.
