The story behind

"Come On / Deep Freeze" is one of those pieces where time seems to stand still. It’s not just one song, but two movements that intertwine like a single breath lasting nearly sixteen minutes. The first track, “Come On,” kicks off with a riff that instantly sticks in your memory—that warm, enveloping sound that already hints at what’s to come. But it’s in “Deep Freeze” where the magic becomes hypnotic: Peter Salisbury’s drums set a rhythm that never lets up, while Nick McCabe’s guitar weaves layers of distortion that wash over one another like waves. There’s something about that build-up that brings to mind those summer days when the heat becomes thick, almost tangible.

The story behind this recording is as intense as the music itself. After the band’s breakup in 1995—and their unexpected reunion without the original guitarist—the group plunged into a chaotic process. Early attempts with producers like John Leckie and Owen Morris came to nothing, and they even tried working with Bernard Butler, a former member of Suede, though his stint was brief. It wasn’t until 1996, at Olympic Studios in London, that they found the sound they were looking for. With Chris Potter at the helm of production and Martin “Youth” Glover as a key figure, they managed to capture that dense atmosphere that defines *Urban Hymns*. The blend of raw energy and polished production sealed the deal for an album that, in 1998, won Best Album at the Brit Awards, beating out bands like Radiohead and Oasis.
