The story behind
Sonnet, according to DoReSol
The song *Sonnet* by The Verve stands out for its musical structure, which recalls *The Drugs Don't Work*, relying on acoustic and electric guitars, and a string section dominated by violins. This piece was conceived by Richard Ashcroft, who composed it as a reflection on the search for love, the perseverance needed to achieve it, and the pain it can entail. Ashcroft has mentioned that the "red box of memories" referenced in the lyrics is a real and tangible object, even going so far as to photograph it for the artwork of a special edition of the album. Despite the personal and sometimes enigmatic nature of his lyrics, Ashcroft prefers not to reveal the exact inspirations, allowing each listener to build their own connection.
The release of *Sonnet* as a single in 1998, the last from the album *Urban Hymns*, had a particular development. The record label, Hut Records, wanted to release another track from the album, an idea with which the band did not fully agree. To meet the label's request while maintaining some control, The Verve agreed to release *Sonnet* under conditions that would make it ineligible for the official charts. Thus, it was published as part of a set of four 12-inch vinyl records, alongside "Stamped", "So Sister", and "Echo Bass". The run was limited to 5,000 copies. Despite this, the song received wide radio play and, thanks to sales of an imported edition, reached number 74 in the UK. It also appeared on the charts in Australia, Iceland, and New Zealand. The music video, filmed in July 1997, takes place in a parking lot and features close-ups of Richard Ashcroft with various backgrounds, concluding with the appearance of all the band members. In 2021, Richard Ashcroft re-recorded *Sonnet* for his album *Acoustic Hymns Vol 1*, and a version of this reinterpretation was used in a 2024 Christmas advertisement by John Lewis & Partners.
