The story behind

Bitter Sweet Symphony, according to DoReSol

The essence of *Bitter Sweet Symphony* lies in how it took a snippet from another era and transformed it into something completely new, almost by accident. The musical foundation was built from a passage in an orchestral version of *The Last Time*, a 1965 track by The Rolling Stones, performed by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra. The band, The Verve, took just four measures of that piece and looped them, adding layers of strings, guitar, percussion, and the vocals of Richard Ashcroft. He envisioned an expansive, almost cinematic sound, similar to what a composer like Ennio Morricone might create, and the song evolved into that "wall of sound" it ultimately became. The way they used that sample, twisting it and giving it a new identity, echoes the techniques of hip-hop's "golden age".

The recording of *Bitter Sweet Symphony* took place in 1997 at the Olympic Studios in London. Producer Youth played a crucial role in the process. Initially, Ashcroft had worked on a version with another producer, but he wasn’t satisfied. It was the addition of the strings, arranged by Wil Malone to sound bold and forceful, that thrilled Ashcroft. The result was a track that, despite its complexity, became a massive hit, reaching number two in the UK and number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. However, the use of the sample led to a legal dispute with Allen Klein, former manager of The Rolling Stones. This resulted in The Verve surrendering all royalties to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who were added to the songwriting credits. It wasn’t until 2019, after Klein’s death, that the song’s rights were returned to Richard Ashcroft. The music video, which features Ashcroft walking through a street in Hoxton, London, bumping into people, also gained significant attention, being nominated for multiple awards at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1998.
