The story behind
Cocos en la playa, according to DoReSol
In Cocos en la playa time seems to stand still. It's not just the rhythm swaying between pop and Mexican tradition, but that feeling of listening to something you already knew without realizing it. Lafourcade makes the song sound like collective memory: her voice intertwines with the April choruses and the string arrangements reminiscent of old Cancionera records, yet with a fresh sparkle, as if the song had been stored in a wooden drawer and only now brought out into the sun. The detail that stands out most is the use of the loop of percussion, which doesn’t follow the standard 4/4 time signature but instead stretches and contracts, giving it that air of controlled improvisation that makes each listen sound different.
Recorded in late 2024 at Sony Music Mexico studios, the song emerged from three weeks of analog tape sessions with eighteen live musicians. Lafourcade and Adán Jodorowsky aimed to capture the magic of a moment without digital editing, as if the entire record were a single take. The result is a piece where the echo of cocos falling onto the sand blends with acoustic guitars and choruses, creating a texture that oscillates between the intimate and the epic. There are no studio touch-ups to soften the edges: what you hear is what was recorded, with its imperfections and its brilliance.
