The story behind

Lafourcade released Cancionera in April 2025, featuring a character that had already been lingering in her music: La Cancionera, her alter ego that allows her to play with the tradition of Mexican female troubadours without staying confined to folklore. The song that gives the album its name sounds like a waltz that unravels and reassembles on the fly, with a piano intertwining with the strings of a classical guitar and a chorus repeating the refrain as if singing at a never-ending village festival. What stands out is not the melody itself, but how it was recorded: on analog tape, live with eighteen musicians around, without any editing or corrections afterward. The result is a track that breathes where others remain in perfection, as if each note had been captured at the exact moment someone first thought of it.

The album was recorded in three weeks, between late 2024 and early 2025, at the Sony Music studios in Mexico City. Natalia Lafourcade and Adán Jodorowsky handled the production, continuing their collaboration from De Todas. They weren’t aiming for a polished sound, but something that felt like shared life: musicians playing together in the same space, acoustic instruments resonating in the same room, voices blending without digital layers to flatten them. Cancionera lasts five minutes and thirty-six seconds, yet within that time lie decades of Mexican music, from boleros to son jarocho, all wrapped in an air that feels like it’s straight out of a café in Coatepec or an old corrido hummed on the street.
