The story behind

Caravana, according to DoReSol

The first time I heard Caravana, I was hooked by that sense of travel floating between the strings. It’s not a song that bursts out with shouts; instead, it moves like a column of dust in the desert: slow, with a cadence that repeats but is never the same, as if each turn of the riff held a different nuance. The bass weaves a melodic line that intertwines with the guitar, and the rhythm, though it seems simple, has an irregular pulse that gives it that flavor of something that sounds like a studio recording but also like a jam session. It’s no coincidence that, when playing it, many guitarists notice the song resists fitting into a traditional time signature: that’s its magic, in that sensation of movement that never quite defines itself.

Recorded in 2006 as part of Ahí vamos, the album that marked Cerati’s return to a rawer, more direct sound, Caravana slipped into the most-listened tracks without needing to be a single. It lasted 4 minutes and 10 seconds, but in that time it achieved what few do: sounding like a sonic postcard of an imaginary journey. The album, released by Sony Music, swept pre-sales in Argentina with a platinum disc and in Mexico with a gold disc, yet Caravana didn’t need awards to stay in memory. Simply put, every time it plays, it invites you to close your eyes and keep on the road.
