Canyon Jam

The story behind

Sepultura recorded Canyon Jam as part of their album Roots, which was released in Europe on February 20, 1996. The song lasts 13 minutes and 17 seconds, and feels like an extension of the energy the band already had. In Roots, Sepultura got closer to Brazilian sounds, using rhythms that remind one of carnival music and group percussion. Canyon Jam is one of those pieces that moves between heavy metal and what could be called a dance rhythm, but without losing the intensity of metal. The band worked with Carlinhos Brown, a Brazilian musician who contributed greatly to the structure of the rhythms. The song feels like a journey, with sections that unfold, as if you were in the middle of a parade. It's a piece that you listen to, but also live.
