The story behind

Ambush, according to DoReSol

Sepultura recorded Ambush in the same session batch that shaped Roots, their 1996 album that brought together the heaviness of metal with Brazilian rhythms and textures. The song isn’t just another track on the record: it hits like a sharp blow, with a groove anchored in a drumbeat that defies conventional timekeeping. The bass and guitars weave into a repetitive pattern, yet their imbalance gives it an air of contained menace. It isn’t a catchy melody but an exercise in tension, where each instrument seems to push from different angles, as if the song breathes in 7/8 time without warning. The final mix, handled by Andy Wallace, amplifies that feeling: ambient sounds and tribal percussion hits feel closer than the rest of the album’s tracks, as though the listener were standing right in the middle of a ritual.

The recording of Roots was an experiment from the start. Sepultura had spent years playing live with local musicians in Brazil, and on this album, they brought that idea into the studio. Carlinhos Brown didn’t just contribute percussion—he helped structure entire sections where Brazilian rhythms aren’t mere decoration but the driving force. Ambush was recorded between February and March 1996 in the United States, with Ross Robinson at the helm of production and a technical team that included Rob Agnello, Chuck Johnson, and Richard Kaplan on recording duties. The mix, overseen by Steve Sisco and Wallace, polished the raw sound already present in the live takes. The result is a song that isn’t meant to be danced to but listened to closely, as if every drum hit or guitar riff hid an encrypted message.
