The story behind
Alter mann, according to DoReSol
Rammstein's second album, *Sehnsucht*, released in 1997, stands out for its visual concept that goes beyond the conventional. The cover, designed by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein, unfolds to reveal the faces of each band member, altered with what appear to be surgical instruments. These items were, in fact, original instruments that belonged to Ferdinand Sauerbruch, a historically renowned surgeon. This detail, along with the image of a white-sand beach on the back cover, creates a thought-provoking contrast. Included on this album is the song “Alter Mann,” a track that runs 4:24. The song was mixed by Ronald Prent, while production was a joint effort by Bobo, Jacob Hellner, and the members of Rammstein themselves.
The album *Sehnsucht*, which hit stores in Germany in August 1997 via Motor Music Records and shortly thereafter the rest of the world, made a significant impact in Europe, reaching number one on the charts in its home country. The band Rammstein, originally from Berlin, Germany, was formed in 1994 and has maintained its original lineup ever since—a rarity in the industry. The members are Till Lindemann on lead vocals, Richard Z. Kruspe and Paul H. Landers on guitars and backing vocals, Oliver “Ollie” Riedel on bass, Christoph “Doom” Schneider on drums and electronic percussion, and Christian “Flake” Lorenz on keyboards. The band’s name, as its members have explained, refers to the Ramstein air show disaster, with the additional “m” in their name giving it the literal meaning of “tamping stone.” Their sound, characteristic of industrial metal, established them as one of the most prominent bands within the Neue Deutsche Härte scene, alongside acts such as Oomph!, Eisbrecher, and Die Krupps. Their live performances are known for their intense theatricality and use of pyrotechnics, elements that have contributed to their global recognition, including awards in places such as the United States of America. By 2009, their music had sold more than 15 million albums worldwide, with their entire catalog released by Universal Music Group.
