The story behind

The song Açaí, part of the album Luz, presents a fusion of rhythms that Djavan has been weaving throughout his career. Born in Maceió, in the state of Alagoas, Brazil, this artist has managed to intertwine the musical roots of South America with the vibrations of Africa, creating a distinctive sound. Before reaching this point, Djavan formed a group called Luz, Som, Dimensão, where they performed covers of The Beatles. His move to Rio de Janeiro in 1973 marked the beginning of his path in nightclubs, and after participating in festivals, his name began to resonate, culminating in his 1976 debut album, A voz, o violão e a arte de Djavan, which included the hit Flor de lis.

In 1982, American producer Quincy Jones, who had acquired the music publishing rights of several Brazilian artists, facilitated Djavan's arrival in the United States. The record label CBS Records, now Sony Music, invited him to record an album intended for the American audience. It was in this context that Djavan met producer Ronnie Foster and musician Stevie Wonder. Together, they recorded the song Samurai in Los Angeles, which appears on the album Luz. Although the album did not have a major commercial impact in the United States, by the fall of 1984 it had already sold 500,000 copies in Brazil. The album Luz, released on August 20, 1982, is Djavan's fifth studio work.
