The story behind

19–2000, according to DoReSol

The song "19-2000," which is three minutes and twenty-eight seconds long, is one of the tracks that defined Gorillaz's early sound. This band, conceived in 1998 by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, is known for its virtual concept, in which four fictional characters—2-D, Noodle, Murdoc Niccals, and Russell Hobbs—take center stage. The way Gorillaz presents its music is as unique as its concept: its songs and narrative universe come to life through animated videos, interviews, and short films. Listening to “19-2000” is like delving into the work of a project that fuses music with a rich visual and fictional dimension, something that gives each chord a unique context.

“19-2000” is one of the singles from Gorillaz’s debut album, released by Parlophone in the United Kingdom on March 26, 2001. This debut album not only reached number three on the UK charts but also sold nearly seven million copies worldwide, an achievement that earned them a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful virtual band. The album is characterized by its sonic experimentation, fusing genres such as trip hop, rap rock, art rock, hip hop, dub, reggae, Latin music, psychedelic music, and punk rock. On the technical side, the recording of this song was made possible thanks to the work of engineers such as Jason Cox and Tom Girling. The production, meanwhile, was a collaborative effort between Jason Cox, Dan the Automator, Tom Girling, and the Gorillaz band itself. Although Damon Albarn is the only consistent musician in the band in real life, the project has evolved: Remi Kabaka Jr., who provided the voice of Russell Hobbs for several years, began collaborating with the group in 2016 and was named an official member alongside Albarn and Hewlett in 2019—a moment captured in the documentary *Gorillaz: Reject False Icons*.
