Willie Colón

Willie Colón was a key figure in New York's music scene, someone who knew how to blend Caribbean rhythms with jazz and rock influences to create a distinctive sound. His work as a trombonist, singer, composer, and producer not only defined part of the salsa sound but also explored the complexities of Puerto Rican identity in the United States. From a young age, Colón showed an inclination for music, learning trumpet and later trombone, influenced by figures like Mon Rivera and Barry Rogers. His connection to Puerto Rico, where he spent summers in the countryside, was deeply reflected in his work, especially in albums like the 1971 Christmas-themed Asalto Navideño, which addressed the relationship between the diaspora and the island's culture in an emotional and reflective way.

His career took off early. At just 15, he signed with Fania Records, and by 17 he released his first album, which achieved notable sales figures. It was in this context that Johnny Pacheco, Fania's producer, suggested collaborating with Héctor Lavoe, a duo that would mark a milestone. Colón not only stood out as a performer but also became a prolific producer, boosting the careers of artists like Celia Cruz, for whom he produced albums such as Only They Could Have Done This Album in 1977 and the successful Celia & Willie in 1981, as well as working with Ismael Miranda and Soledad Bravo. His ability to combine elements from diverse cultures, from African rhythms in Cuba and the Dominican Republic to Brazilian music, allowed him to create his own musical language that resonated with the diaspora.
