The story behind
The El malo is an album that became a starting point, presenting a sonic proposal that would later be known as New York-born salsa. This work, released in 1967, not only marked the debut of Willie Colón, but also paved the way for a new Latin sound that would capture global attention in the following decade. It was the first LP on which Yayo El Indio and Elliot Romero collaborated, and it featured the lead vocals of a young Héctor Lavoe for the first time, laying the groundwork for a duo that would leave its mark.
Willie Colón, at just 16 years old, was already an experienced trombonist. Coming from a family of Puerto Rican immigrants in New York, his music often reflected a form of social expression, seeking recognition for Latin culture in an environment that did not always receive it with open arms. The production of this album was handled by Jerry Masucci, and the track El malo itself has a duration of 3 minutes and 59 seconds.
