The story behind

Willie Baby, according to DoReSol

When Willie Colón recorded Willie Baby, he was only 16 years old and already a trombone master. This track, lasting 2:48, is part of El Malo, his first album, released in 1967 by Fania Records. What's interesting is that this record not only marked the beginning of his career but also became a benchmark for the sound of salsa born in New York.

On El Malo, Willie Colón featured the vocals of Yayo El Indio and Elliot Romero, in addition to the participation of a young Héctor Lavoe, who took on the role of lead singer. The production was handled by Jerry Masucci. This discographic work, driven by the energy of musicians like Colón, a grandson of Puerto Rican immigrants, resonated strongly and helped rekindle interest in Latin music in the 1970s, paving the way for the international projection of Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe.
