The story behind
When you dive into *Chonqui*, you encounter a theme that, despite its short duration of 4:10, encapsulates a particular energy. It is one of the pieces that make up El Malo, the first work by Willie Colón, released in 1967. This album marked an important moment, being among the first to showcase that sound that was beginning to gestate in New York, a mixture that would later be known as New York salsa. This sound not only revived interest in Latin music in the 70s but also paved the way for Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe on the international stage.
Willie Colón, at just 16 years old at the time, was already an experienced trombonist. Raised in New York and with Puerto Rican roots, he used his music as a form of expression, especially in the face of the lack of recognition of Latin culture by some sectors of the United States. The production of El Malo was handled by Jerry Masucci, and it featured the vocals of Yayo El Indio and Elliot Romero, in addition to the participation of a young Héctor Lavoe.
