The story behind

The track Quimbombo, with its 5:00 duration, is a piece that invites immersion into the roots of New York salsa. Released in 1967, this cut was part of El Malo, the album that marked the beginning of Willie Colón's career. What's interesting about this work is that it became one of the first to define that particular salsa sound that would emerge in New York, a style that would later, in the 1970s, revitalize global interest in Latin music.

This debut album, produced by Jerry Masucci under the Fania Records label, not only laid the groundwork for a new sound but also paved the international path for Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe. Colón, just 16 years old at the time, was already a consummate trombonist. Hailing from a family of Puerto Rican immigrants in New York, he used his music as a form of expression and social protest, seeking greater recognition for Latin culture among Americans. On El Malo, the vocals of Yayo El Indio and Elliot Romero accompany a young Héctor Lavoe, who stands out as the lead singer.
