More about Norah Jones
Biography
At twenty, she returned to New York and never went back to Texas. She got into the Greenwich Village circuit, playing in clubs and concerts, sometimes just in front of fifteen people. She left university, started writing songs and formed a group. The bassist was Lee Alexander, the guitarist Jesse Harris, and the drummer Dan Rieser. She stayed at the club The Living Room, where she often sang.
One day, a guy from EMI, Shell White, heard her at a concert. He liked what he saw and asked for a demo. She took it to Bruce Lundvall, of Blue Note. He hired her after listening to just three songs. He gave it to Craig Street to work on the material, but the initial version was more pop than what they were looking for. Then he asked Arif Mardin to do a new version, more focused on her voice. The result was Come Away With Me, which came out in 2002 with little publicity. But it sold a lot, and ended up being a success. It was platinum in several countries and won five Grammys in 2003, including best album and best artist. It was a surprise, because they almost gave it all to Eminem.
