Los Gatos

Los Gatos was born at the exact moment when Argentine rock stopped being a whisper and became a roar. They weren’t the first band to play rock in the country, but they were the ones who turned the genre from a barroom pastime into a phenomenon that crossed borders. Their sound was unlike anything heard before: guitars that rang with freedom, keyboards floating over urgent rhythms, and a voice—Litto Nebbia’s—that sang as if every word were a challenge. They didn’t improvise or cover foreign hits; they wrote their own songs from scratch, something that in 1967 was still far from the norm. The turning point came with La Balsa, a track now hailed as the birth certificate of Argentine rock.

They recorded it in the dead of night, in a borrowed studio, and it aired in July 1967. They weren’t chasing a hit, but the album sold nearly two hundred thousand copies in weeks. Suddenly, Rosario and Buenos Aires weren’t just cities anymore: they were the heart of something bigger. The song didn’t just sound different; its lyrics spoke of escape, of a journey with no fixed destination—and that resonated with a generation eager to break free from everything. The band played at La Cueva, that jazz den on Avenida Pueyrredón where musicians gathered after shows to keep playing until dawn. There, amid smoke and cold coffee, the sound that would define Los Gatos was forged: raw, electric, and unfiltered. The group disbanded in 1968, but not before leaving behind three albums that now stand as documents of an era.

Biography

When they reunited in 1969—this time with Pappo replacing Kay Galifi—Argentine rock had changed forever. La Balsa still echoed everywhere, but they were no longer the same: they had grown alongside their audience. Decades later, in 2017, Nebbia faced Sony over the rights to his music, a battle that ended with the reissue of his discography on vinyl and CD. The band that had started in a jazz club ended up as a symbol of what Argentine rock could achieve when it dared to be authentic.
