Julieta Venegas

Julieta Venegas was born on November 24, 1970, in Long Beach, California, but grew up in Tijuana with her twin sister Yvonne. Her parents, both photographers, supported her since adolescence to study classical piano, violoncello, and music theory. At the age of 8, she already knew music was her calling. At that time, she composed with very diverse influences: Suzanne Vega, David Bowie, Prince, Charly García.Before launching her solo career, she played in the Mexican ska and reggae band Tijuana No!, where she wrote with Álex Zúñiga the most popular song of the group: Pobre de ti.

In 1996, she moved to Mexico City with the support of Café Tacvba and signed with BMG/Ariola. Thus came Aquí (1997) and Bueninvento (2000), both produced by Gustavo Santaolalla, with good reception among the rock audience of Mexico, Central America, and South America. (2003) gave her more weight in the scene. Then came Limón y Sal (2006), already with Sony & BMG, and in 2008 she recorded her first live album: MTV Unplugged. With Sony Music she released Otra Cosa (2010), a more stripped-down and personal work that led her to perform on international stages. In 2013 she took a turn with Los Momentos, betting on indie and minimalism.

Biography

It was her least commercial album, but it still reached the top positions in digital stores. Two years later, Algo Sucede (2015) debuted at number 1 on the Latin Pop Albums chart of Billboard, with accordion and acoustic sounds returning. She then ventured into theater with La Enamorada, a play by the Argentine writer Santiago Loza, and from there came an album of the same name (2019) with songs based on that text. In November 2022, Tu Historia appeared, and a year later she also released it on vinyl — 11 songs of indie, pop rock, and alternativo.Along the way, she accumulated a Grammy, nine Latin Grammy awards, seven MTV awards, seven from Broadcast Music Inc, eight VEVO Certified, three Premios Oye!, and two Billboard Music Awards, as well as recognitions such as the «Master Of Latin Music Award» from Berklee College and the «Musa Awards Elena Casals» for her work as a composer.

In 2009, UNICEF named her «Ambassador of Goodwill» in Mexico, and in 2011, COMMCA gave her the same role as Cultural Ambassador of Goodwill for Central America. It is estimated that she has sold over 30 million records worldwide.
