Hombres G

The sound of Hombres G is a blend of straightforward rock and roll and catchy pop rock, where clean guitars and catchy basslines mix with lyrics ranging from sharp humor to teenage confessions. Their music has that band vibe that doesn’t aim for virtuosity but instead connects with the audience from the very first chord. The riff from «Devuélveme a mi chica» —which is actually a song called «Sufre mamón»— is a good example: simple, repetitive, and with a rhythm that sticks in the memory like a magnet. But it’s not all energy: their early albums also include ballads like «No lloraré», a cover of Alice Cooper adapted to the band’s style.

Their breakthrough from obscurity to fame came in 1985, when they signed with Producciones Twins and recorded their self-titled debut album. The single «Devuélveme a mi chica» became an unexpected hit on Spanish radio, but the most curious part is that the band almost didn’t record that album. Earlier, in 1984, their previous label, Discos Lollipop, suggested delaying the recording due to financial issues, and between discouragement and a lack of offers from other record companies, they nearly gave up. It was then that Paco Martín, who had just founded his own label, offered them a chance. Recorded at Estudios Trak, that first work put them on the map, but the real leap came later when the album reached Latin America and «Marta tiene un marcapasos» —another of their early songs— became an anthem in countries like Mexico and Argentina.

Biography

Between 1986 and 1989, Hombres G solidified their style with albums like La cagaste... Burt Lancaster and Voy a pasármelo bien, where humor and irony blended with infectious melodies. The title of the second album, for instance, was a phrase already present in one of their early songs, and the record includes tracks like «El ataque de las chicas cocodrilo» or «Indiana», reinforcing that identity between carefree and commercial. But their biggest success in that period was Estamos locos... ¿o qué? (1987), which sold over a million copies in Spain alone. By the late '80s, they were already a phenomenon in Latin America, touring in packed small stadiums. They even starred in a film, Voy a pasármelo bien, reflecting that collective euphoria. Later came years of ups and downs, including their split in 1992 after Historia del bikini, but their return in 2003 with El Año que Vivimos Peligrosamente —alongside Dani Martín— proved their music still resonated decades later.
