Bacilos

Bacilos is an American Latin pop band formed in 1997 in Miami, Florida, by the Colombian Jorge Villamizar, the Puerto Rican José Javier «JJ» Freire, and the Brazilian André Lopes. Their music is of the pop genre in its Latin, folk, rock, and Latin American fusion variants. In early 1997, when José Javier Freire (nicknamed JJ) and Jorge Villamizar were studying at the University of Miami, they decided to form an alternative rock group. Jorge was the vocalist and guitarist of that emerging group, while JJ was the drummer and percussionist; they were also joined by some American classmates. They started working in bars in the region.

At that time, Jorge developed his talents as a singer-songwriter, thanks to his experience in London with the group Robin Jones & King Salsa. [citation required]Later, at university, they met Andrés Lopes, who had already played with a Brazilian samba and bossa nova band, and invited him to join and form a new group, which they decided to call Bacilos Búlgaros. Later, they simplified the name to Bacilos, and the lineup was: Jorge as leader, vocalist, and songwriter; JJ as percussionist and drummer; and Andre on bass. [citation required]Quickly, Bacilos found fame playing in various places in Florida, and won the sympathy of many fans.

Biography

This caught the attention of several music industry executives, who offered them their first contract with a Venezuelan record label. [citation required] Their first record contract was not very beneficial, and they were forced to be off the stage for nearly four years. During that time, the group disbanded, as Jorge had to return to his country due to the expiration of the visa that allowed him to be in the United States. He returned to Miami in 1999 to reunite the group and record their first independent album, called Madera, which sold 1,000 copies in a few weeks. Thanks to it, Bacilos were offered a record contract with WEA International in 2000.In 2000, they released the album Bacilos.

It was a reissue of Madera, this time under the WEA International label. Their first single, «Olor a tabaco y chanel», was an inspiration from the original theme written by Gina Jacome, named «Chamaco y Papel». The band presented this album as opening act in Alejandro Sanz's El alma al aire tour.In 2002, they released their second album, Caraluna. From here came the hit of the same name «Caraluna» and «Mi primer millón».In 2003, Sólo Un Segundo, Lo Mejor de Bacilos, the band's first compilation album, included 12 songs, 4 of which belonged to their first album and the remaining 8 to the Caraluna album. After releasing their last album, Bacilos released their third album named Sin vergüenza, launched in 2004 with 12 songs.

One of them, «Un regalo», is performed by José Javier Freire. [citation required]In 2006, they released their last production with Warner Music, Grandes Éxitos. It compiles songs from the three previous albums, plus two unreleased tracks. In 2006, they performed their last tour, titled Contigo se va, across America and the European continent. Their last group concert was on February 22, 2007, during the XLVIII International Song Festival of Viña del Mar in Viña del Mar, Chile; where they received the silver and gold torches.
