The story behind
The melody of Caraluna, born in 2002, evokes a story of heartbreak and lingering memories. The lyrics seem to paint a picture of someone who cannot forget a special person, seeing them reflected in the moon and hearing their voice on the radio. However, around this composition by Jorge Villamizar, leader of Bacilos, a legend has emerged pointing to a more personal and tragic inspiration: that of an ex-girlfriend who, it is said, drowned at sea. Although Villamizar, in a 2022 conversation, nuanced these rumors, acknowledging that while no ex-partner suffered a fatal accident, there may have been past experiences that were not so positive, and even arguments, that influenced the writing, he left open the possibility that these events were decisive.
This track, with a duration of 4:26, was the first single from the group's second studio album, also titled Caraluna. The recording of this album, released by WEA Latina in 2002, was a milestone for Bacilos, a group formed in Miami, Florida, with members of diverse nationalities: Jorge Villamizar from Colombia, André Lopes from Brazil, and José Javier Freire from Puerto Rico. The album not only catapulted the band to fame but also received a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album and a Latin Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album by a Duo or Group. The authorship of the lyrics is also attributed to Rosario Navarrete. Bacilos' unique sound, which fused Latin rhythms like salsa, rumba, and Cuban son with acoustic pop, distinguished them and allowed them to achieve recognition in America and Europe, especially in Spain.
