B.B. King

B.B. King, born Riley B. King on September 16, 1925, in Itta Bena, Mississippi, is a pivotal figure in blues history. His distinctive electric guitar style is marked by masterful string bending, a bright vibrato, and staccato picking that have left an indelible mark on generations of guitarists. Known as the "King of the Blues," his music has influenced a wide range of artists, and his sound has become a benchmark within the genre. From his early days in the juke joints of the Mississippi Delta, King showed unwavering dedication to his craft. Over a career spanning several decades, he performed over 200 concerts annually, even in his seventies, demonstrating his passion and commitment to music.

In 1951, he achieved his first major success with "Three o'Clock in the Morning," but it was in 1968 when he reached a broader audience with his rendition of "The Thrill Is Gone," a track that resonated in both R&B and pop charts—a rare feat for a blues artist.King moved to Memphis in 1946, where his career took off after appearances on Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio program. His work at WDIA earned him the nickname "Beale Street Blues Boy," which later shortened to "B.B." During his performances, his guitar, which he named Lucille, became his inseparable companion, and his unique style blended jazz, swing, and pop influences, creating a sound instantly recognizable.
