More about Albert King
Biography
The song of the same name, written by Booker T. Jones and William Bell, became his most famous track and has been covered by numerous artists, from Cream to Homer Simpson. On February 1, 1968, Albert King was invited by promoter Bill Graham to perform at the Fillmore Auditorium, in a concert that also included Jimi Hendrix. The band Soft Machine opened the event, but the audience, eager to see King and Hendrix, began to chant Albert King's name, which caused Graham's annoyance, who reprimanded the audience for their lack of respect. Attendees at the concert reported that King won over the audience with his skill, even replacing a broken string without stopping playing.
When Hendrix took the stage, he said: Ok, Albert King, I've got the indirecta, and played some of King's chords in tribute. In June 1970, Albert King accompanied The Doors at their concert at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, being one of the highlights of the tour.King left a deep mark on many blues guitarists, such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, Gary Moore, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Eric Clapton's guitar solo in Strange Brew of Cream is an emulation of King's solo in Oh, Pretty Woman, recorded with Stax. In 1983, Albert King recorded with Stevie Ray Vaughan the hit In Session.
Years later, he shared the stage with B.B. King and other artists such as Robert Cray, Etta James, and Junior Wells. In 1988, he participated as a guest in the special B.B. King and Friends alongside musicians such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Gladys Knight, Paul Butterfield, Chaka Khan, and Billy Ocean. Albert King, whom B.B. King affectionately called Big brother of blues, performed with him at the Japan Blues Carnival in 1989.
