«Wild Horses» is a song by the iconic British rock band The Rolling Stones, included on their 1971 album Sticky Fingers. The composition was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at number 334 on its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. The recording of «Wild Horses» took place between December 1969 and February 1970. It is rumored that Richards initially wrote it as an emotional response to the need to leave his newborn son Marlon behind to go on tour. Although Jagger is said to have modified much of the lyrics to reflect the end of his relationship with Marianne Faithfull, he himself clarified in the collection Jump Back: The Best of The Rolling Stones that this was not the case. The song was recorded at Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama over three days, from December 2 to 4, 1969, without the presence of producer Jimmy Miller. At the time, Albert and David Maysles were filming the movie Gimme Shelter. Due to legal issues with their former record label, the release of the song was delayed by one year. Along with «Brown Sugar», it is one of the compositions on the album Sticky Fingers whose rights are shared with ABKCO Records. The single was released in June 1971 exclusively in the United States, reaching number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. Later, the band recorded a renewed version for their live acoustic album Stripped, which was released as a single in early 1996. An early acoustic version of «Wild Horses» was included in the Deluxe and Super Deluxe editions of the reissued album Sticky Fingers, released on June 8, 2015. The song also appears on several of the band's concert DVDs, such as Bridges to Babylon Tour '97–'98 (1998), Four Flicks (2003), and The Biggest Bang (2007). Jagger's ex-wife, Jerry Hall, has mentioned that «Wild Horses» is her favorite Stones song. In addition, an instrumental version of the song can be heard during the closing credits of the documentary Shine a Light (2008), directed by Martin Scorsese. In 2011, singer and actress Elizabeth Gillies recorded her own version of the song. A year before it was released on Sticky Fingers, Gram Parsons convinced Jagger and Richards to record «Wild Horses» with his band, The Flying Burrito Brothers. This version was included on the album Burrito Deluxe, released in April 1970 by A&M Records. The song has been covered by numerous artists, including Summerhill, Old and in the Way, The Sundays, Guns N' Roses, Leon Russell (who performed it in a bluegrass style), Bush, Tori Amos, Labelle, The Lovemongers with Chris Cornell, Dave Matthews, Garbage, Charlotte Martin, Melanie Safka, and more recently Alicia Keys, Sheryl Crow, Adam Levine, Tre Lux, Iron & Wine, Deacon Blue, Elisa, and Susan Boyle. The version by The Sundays was used in a Budweiser advertisement in the early 1990s.
