When you think of Gimme Shelter, imagine The Rolling Stones in 1969, in the heart of London, creating something special. Mick Jagger provides the words, while Keith Richards takes care of the music. All of this happens under the watch of American producer Jimmy Miller, who had already worked with them on Beggars Banquet. During the recording sessions, between February and March, the powerful voice of Merry Clayton joins in, bringing a touch of soul and gospel that takes the song to another level.

The story behind

The Rolling Stones released «Gimme Shelter» on December 5, 1969, as the first track of their album Let It Bleed, where the title appeared spelled as «Gimmie Shelter». The song lasts 4 minutes and 32 seconds and was released under the Decca label in the United Kingdom and London in the United States. The lyrics were written by singer Mick Jagger, while the music was composed by guitarist Keith Richards. Both are credited as co-authors under the signature Jagger–Richards. Richards had been working on the introductory melody of the piece in London while Jagger was busy filming the movie Performance. The song takes the form of a mid-tempo rock with an agitated character: it opens with a rhythmic guitar intro by Richards, followed by Jagger's vocals. The recording sessions took place at Olympic Sound Studios in London, England, between February 23 and early March 1969. Production was handled by American Jimmy Miller, who had already produced the band's previous album, Beggars Banquet, from 1968, and engineering was carried out by Glyn Johns. Subsequently, between October and November of that same year, the recording was completed at Sunset Sound & Elektra Studios in Los Angeles, California, where Merry Clayton, a soul and gospel singer, joined the project. Incorporating Clayton was a decision made by producer Miller himself. As for the musicians involved: Nicky Hopkins played the pianos; Miller took on percussion; Charlie Watts was in charge of the drums; Bill Wyman played bass; Jagger, in addition to singing, played the harmonica, which can be heard during the chorus sung alongside Richards and Clayton; and Richards contributed electric guitar and backing vocals. Guitarist Brian Jones was not present during the recording of the track. The song opens with Richards strumming an F-Hole guitar, an Australian electro-acoustic instrument, a very close copy of the Gibson used by American rock and roll singer Chuck Berry, one of Richards's key references. That instrument gave the song an uncommonly dark aura within the band's repertoire. After the second verse, Merry Clayton sings the phrase «Rape, murder, it's just a shot away» with a raw, torn voice, cracking on two occasions. The reaction from Jagger and the others present in the studio was such that an exclamation of astonishment can be heard on the recording; an extended solo by Richards follows. Thematically, the lyrics address the search for shelter from an impending storm in a world fractured by military, racial and ideological conflicts, drawing an image of devastation and social apocalypse. Jagger noted in an interview published by Rolling Stone magazine in 1995 that his main inspiration, as with the entire album Let It Bleed, was the violence generated by the Vietnam War. The song reminds the listener that such devastation is «just a shot away», although toward the end, love appears as a possible salvation. The song's genre combines hard rock, blues rock and roots rock. Despite never having been released as a single at the time, it became an indispensable piece of the band's concerts from its very appearance. Critics place it among the best recordings by The Rolling Stones and among the best in the history of rock. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at number 38 on its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
