The story behind
When you dive into Wherever I May Roam, the first thing that catches your attention is that very particular introduction. It's not what one would expect from Metallica. Hearing a sitar and a gong opening a heavy metal song is a detail that breaks the mold. Added to this is a twelve-string bass that gives a different weight to those initial notes, before giving way to the band's more familiar sound. The recording of this piece, which was released as a single in October 1992, took place in April of the same year at the One on One studios in Los Angeles.
The composition of Wherever I May Roam, included in the self-titled 1991 album, is the work of James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, who also participated in the production alongside Bob Rock. The track was released as the fourth promotional cut from that album, also known as The Black Album. While the album marked a shift towards a heavier and more refined sound, this particular song stands out for its exotic opening and the use of instruments not common in their repertoire. The version we hear on the album has a duration of 6:44, although other sources list it as 7:18.
