The story behind
The song Breadfan, originally by the Welsh band Budgie, released in 1973, addresses the complex human relationship with money. The lyrics explore the moral dilemmas that arise from possessing it: whether to save it, share it, spend it, or, ultimately, to free oneself from its dominion so that it does not control life. This musical piece has transcended its original context, appearing in the video game Brütal Legend and being used in sports program introductions on Brazilian television. The original version included a fragment of a Winston Churchill speech from 1942, but it had to be removed in later editions due to copyright issues.
The audiovisual material from that era also has its story. A promotional clip of Budgie performing Breadfan on 18mm videotape was created. This video was broadcast in 1973 as filler in a program and was believed lost for years. However, it was rediscovered without sound, and a BBC Wales technician managed to restore it. The clip was made available to the public along with the remastering of the album Never Turn Your Back on a Friend in 2004, reaching over 8.6 million views on YouTube. Breadfan is considered to have influenced the evolution of the progressive metal genre.
The band Metallica recorded their own version of Breadfan in September 1988, releasing it as the B-side of their singles Harvester of Sorrow and Eye of the Beholder. Later, this version was included in their 1998 album, Garage Inc., and was a recurring track in their concerts as part of the encores during the 1988-1989 tours, in support of their album ...And Justice for All. A live performance of Breadfan was documented in the set Live Shit: Binge & Purge, captured at their concerts in Seattle on August 29 and 30, 1989, where it was played in the second encore. It was also a frequent opening track on the Shit Hits the Sheds Tour and was regularly heard on the Madly In Anger with the World and World Magnetic Tours. A brief excerpt of Breadfan is used at the beginning of the music video for Whiskey in the Jar. The mix of this Metallica version was handled by Greg Fidelman.
