The story behind

Holier Than Thou, according to DoReSol

The third track on Metallica's self-titled album, *Holier Than Thou*, stands out for being the fastest and shortest on the record. Its initial sound incorporates a *talkbox* effect, something unprecedented in the band's discography up to that point, creating dissonances that mark its entry. The lyrics, for their part, address themes such as arrogance, rumors, and social criticism towards those who judge others.

The recording of this album, also known as *The Black Album*, took place at the One on One studios in Los Angeles over an eight-month period, starting August 12, 1991, under the Elektra Records label. The work process, which involved the production of James Hetfield, Bob Rock, and Lars Ulrich, was not without tensions between the band and the producer. This album marked a shift in Metallica's style, moving away from the *thrash metal* of their previous works to explore a more deliberate and powerful sound. Although the possibility of releasing *Holier Than Thou* as the first single to introduce the new album was considered, Lars Ulrich ultimately suggested that *Enter Sandman* would be a more suitable option for that purpose.
