The story behind
Vos también estabas verde, according to DoReSol
The song Vos también estabas verde sounds like a sigh between rock and pop, with an air of confession that is sometimes only achieved when lyrics and music blend without filters. The track progresses with a rhythm that seems to walk between disorder and precision, as if each note were recounting something that has already passed but remains alive. There is something in the way Charly García sings —with that voice that oscillates between intimacy and defiance— that makes the listener feel they are hearing a personal story, yet one that belongs to anyone who has ever experienced that mix of nostalgia and urgency. The recording, made in 1982, carries the weight of a complicated time for Argentina, but the song does not sound like protest: it sounds like raw, unadorned truth.
Recorded at Estudios ION and Estudios Panda during August 1982, in the midst of the final days of Argentina’s last military dictatorship, the song is part of Yendo de la cama al living, the first solo album by Charly García. At the time, he was already 30 years old and had been part of bands like Sui Géneris and Serú Girán, but here he stands alone, with a production that blends the homemade with the professional. Among the album’s guests are Luis Alberto Spinetta, Pedro Aznar, and León Gieco —the latter credited as Ricardo Gómez due to contract issues—, lending the session an air of a gathering of old friends that, however, does not lose its intensity. The final mix was done at Estudios ION, with Amílcar Gilabert at the helm, a detail that helps explain why the sound has that warmth often missing in more polished recordings. At just three minutes and six seconds long, the song does not overstay its welcome: it goes straight to the point, as if knowing it needs no more.
