The story behind
Under the Bridge, according to DoReSol
When Anthony Kiedis wrote the lyrics for "Under the Bridge", he was going through a period of deep loneliness. He reflected on his struggle with addiction and the distance he felt from his bandmates, who continued to use drugs. He even came to believe that the city of Los Angeles was his only companion, and that the spirit of its hills and streets watched over him. In his memory, he captured how loneliness led him to recall his ex-girlfriend, Ione Skye, and how, instead of cherishing that love, he found himself in extreme situations to obtain drugs. One such experience led him to pretend to be the fiancé of a gang member’s sister to buy substances under a bridge, a moment he described as one of his lowest points. The song also addresses the devastating impact of drugs on his relationships and his own happiness.
The producer Rick Rubin was instrumental in bringing this piece to life. While reviewing Kiedis’s material for the album Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991), he found a poem titled "Under the Bridge". Despite Kiedis’ initial reluctance—he felt the lyrics were too personal and didn’t fit the style of the Red Hot Chili Peppers—Rubin encouraged him to share it with the rest of the band. John Frusciante and Chad Smith reacted positively, and soon they began improvising over the melody and chords. Frusciante, in particular, sought to create a harmony that contrasted with the melancholy of the lyrics, aiming for a balance between the sadness of the words and the music. The song was completed before the band moved to The Mansion to record the rest of the album. After recording, Rubin suggested adding a choir, and Frusciante invited his mother and a friend, both choir singers, to give it that sonic dimension. "Under the Bridge" was released as a single in February 1992 and became a major commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and helping the Red Hot Chili Peppers solidify their place in the mainstream.
