The story behind
Breaking the Girl, according to DoReSol
The song Breaking the Girl by Red Hot Chili Peppers immerses us in a melodic atmosphere that contrasts with the band's usual energy. It is said that its lyrics, written by Anthony Kiedis, are a reflection of his love life at the time, marked by ups and downs and a difficulty in focusing on a single relationship, specifically with Carmen Hawk. The song's structure features a bridge distinguished by increasingly intricate rhythmic development, where percussion instruments were created from objects found in a junkyard. Chad Smith, John Frusciante, and Flea were responsible for shaping these sounds. Frusciante's main riff took inspiration from Led Zeppelin ballads like The Battle of Evermore and Friends. For the recording, a 12-string guitar tuned a semitone lower and a Mellotron with a flute sound were used, all within a 6/8 meter. Chad Smith mentioned on The Chad & Flea Show that his drumming style on this track was inspired by Mitch Mitchell's work with The Jimi Hendrix Experience on Manic Depression.
This track, with a duration of 4:55 on its album version, was released as the fourth single from Blood Sugar Sex Magik in August 1992. The album, produced by Rick Rubin and recorded at The Mansion in Los Angeles, California, marked a shift in the band's style, giving more prominence to John Frusciante's melodic compositions. The song was edited with a 4:27 cut. The music video, premiered on July 30, 1992, and directed by Stéphane Sednaoui, experiments with vibrant colors and constant changes in backgrounds and costumes, presenting the band members with surreal appearances and behaviors. It features Arik Marshall, who briefly replaced John Frusciante, although he did not play on the recording. The video also includes a brief cameo by River Phoenix. The song was performed at the opening of the Blood Sugar Sex Magik tour in 1991, and later reappeared sporadically in concerts in 2000, 2003, and most recently in 2017 on The Getaway World Tour, in addition to a performance with The Roots in 2014.
