The story behind

Piano Bar sounds as if Charly García had plugged the piano into a stadium amplifier and let it play until the venue collapsed. Recorded live at the ION Studios in Buenos Aires, with only last-minute overdubs, the album has that raw edge that only comes when the music flows without a net. The final mix was finished at Electric Lady Studios in New York, but the heart of the sound lies in that recording where every key, every drum hit, and every voice sound as if they’re about to break. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it 12th on its list of the best Argentine rock albums, and the performance at the Luna Park Stadium was immortalized in the DVD Charly García Oro.The song Tuve tu amor lasts 3 minutes and 32 seconds, but in that time it achieves something few of Charly’s pieces do: it feels like an embrace that doesn’t ask for permission. There are no unnecessary adornments, just a melody that repeats with the insistence of a memory you don’t want to let go of. The album Piano Bar was released in 1984, a year in which García had already moved beyond the structures of Sui Géneris and Serú Girán to explore a more personal sound. Among the awards in his career—such as the Grammy for Musical Excellence in Las Vegas or the 1985 Premio Konex—this song remains an example of how rock can be made with a piano and a clear idea.
