The story behind
Triste, according to DoReSol
The song *Triste* has an interesting history that begins in Los Angeles, in 1966. Antônio Carlos Jobim composed it while staying at the Sunset Marquis Hotel, hoping that Frank Sinatra would return from a trip to Barbados to record together. The first time we heard this melody was in an instrumental version that Tom Jobim himself included on his 1967 album, *Wave*. Later, Sinatra recorded the piece with Jobim, and although it was intended for a joint album, it ended up on side A of *Sinatra & Company* in 1971.
But it was in 1973 when Elis Regina gave *Triste* a new life. She recorded a duet version with Tom Jobim for the album *Elis & Tom*, a record conceived as a gift for Elis for her ten years with Philips. The recording of this album took place at MGM Studios in Los Angeles, California, between February and March 1974. The arrangements, handled by César Camargo Mariano, then husband of Elis, brought freshness by incorporating electric instruments into bossa nova, creating a distinctive sound for classics like *Águas de Março* and *Corcovado*. Interestingly, Tom Jobim also recorded an English version of *Triste* in 1980, for his album *Terra Brasilis*.
